Reading #4

I thought this chapter was very useful as far as getting information on how to run an illustration business. You don't really find stuff like this very often that kind of lays everything out for you like this chapter did.  It was helpful for me to be able to see how an illustration business should be broken down into categories such as: marketing and sales, financial, and operational aspects. Also thought it was helpful that the book outlined these important things: don't work for free, negotiate, conduct yourself in a professional manner, stick up for yourself, be tenacious, don't let clients change your work, and be efficient.

Semiotics analysis

According to Saussure's semiotic model, the signifier of my illustration would probably be the word death. Death has a strong meaning, and one that everyone can understand or relate to in some way, so this may be kind of a striking signifier.  The signified is the dead salmon at the top of the piece.  These play off each other because when you see the word death you automatically start looking for what is "dead", thus you see the green and yellow colored salmon, with x's over their eyes, and know that that is the object that is being signified by the word death.
