According to Saussure's semiotic model, the signifier of my illustration would probably be the word death. Death has a strong meaning, and one that everyone can understand or relate to in some way, so this may be kind of a striking signifier. The signified is the dead salmon at the top of the piece. These play off each other because when you see the word death you automatically start looking for what is "dead", thus you see the green and yellow colored salmon, with x's over their eyes, and know that that is the object that is being signified by the word death.
