The Mechanics of Illustration
Communication deals with the process of sending messages between people in a number of different ways.
Four steps of communication process:
1- you: the communicator or originator of the message
2- message: the "thought" and the code used to communicate that thought
3- channel/medium: means and media type used
4-destination: decoding of the message and the intended destination
Two schools of communication:
The process school:
-separates elements and parts in order to see how the whole process functions
The semiotic school:
-concentrated on "text"
Communication is important because everyone needs to send messages.
Illustrator Mentor
For my illustrator mentor, I chose Julia Rothman. She is from Bronx, NY, and currently lives in Brooklyn. She graduated from RISD and currently works as a free-lance illustrator. She has done a lot of pieces that have to do with patterns, and she has also written and illustrated a few books, like the one below called "Nature Anatomy." In this book she pretty much breaks down and illustrates everything nature related; types of trees, parts of a bird, different types of eggs, the salmon life-cycle, and so on. I just love her!

Applied art and fine art are two different things: applied art is used to solve visual problems whether they be your own or someone elses, and fine art stands alone. There are series of questions to ask in order to help us determine which is which. Applied art and fine art are similar in that of they both deal with visual language.
Illustrators and artists are faced with the "blank space," where they essentially have to make something out of nothing.
Pictures and words are intertwined- and most of the time work better together than they do on their own. This concept of words intermingled with images is graphic design. Each pictures and words are effective in their own ways, and both have their own setbacks, but when put together they help to push each others strengths forward and can eliminate downfalls.
There are 7 steps to developing your product, or illustration (According to Edward De Bono). "The Six Thinking Hats" are methods that are used in relation with the seven steps to help problem solve.
